Historically a large and importatnt city of the northwest of Ukraine, Sumy does not warrant any particular highlighting today except that it is a pleasantly average town of the Sloboda. Founded in 1655 on the river Psyol, this was the largest of the Cossack fortress in Sloboda. The town's name comes from the old Slavic word for bags after the first inhabitants found three leather bags of gold stashed in on oak tree. The mint-green Svyato-Voskresenska Church was built in 1702 and stands as a raremonument to early Sloboda architecture, with its compact Greek-cross floor plan and triple turrets. The stately high-domed Troitsky Cathedral on top of the "Old hill" is the youngest of the three, built in the 1901 in imitation classic and Baroque styles.
