Dnipropetrovsk is the heart of Ukraine. No matter what your destination in Ukraine, you'll probably pass by this city. Located at the Dnipro river, this third largest Ukrainian city sits at the meeting points of the two halfs of the country. Geographically closer to the East, politically it has always been closer to the capital Kyiv. This contrast has become a local trademark.
The city, founded in the midst of Cossack settlements, later to become the third capital of the Russian Empire, never really reached the status it desired and turned into an ordinary provincial city. In the second half of the 19th century it became an industrial giant, and has started to change its face again in the 21st .

Dipropetrovsk offers visitors a lot of sights, historical places and monuments. The city has a variety of theatres (plus an Opera) and museums, which may be of interest to tourists who speak Russian. There are also several parks, restaurants and beaches which have no linguistic requirements. The major streets of the city were renamed in honour of Marxist heroes during the Soviet era. The central thoroughfare is known as Karla Marksa Street, a beautiful, wide and long boulevard that stretches east to west through the centre of the city. It was founded in the eighteenth century and parts of its buildings are the actual decoration of the city. While there is no longer any compact "old town" in Dnipropetrovsk, there are still many surviving buildings of historical interest. The Dnieper River keeps the climate mild. It is visible from many points in Dnipropetrovsk. From any hill (there are 3 in the city) you will find a beautiful view of the river, islands, parks, outskirts, river banks and hills.
Dnipropetrovsk' subway was opened in 1995, this "fastest means of transport in a city" hasn't yet become an integral part of the city's infrastructure. Its six stations connect the central train station to a formerly important part of Dnipro – the industrial district. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the following decline of manufacturing in Dnipro left the subway almost without passengers. Still, independent Ukraine opened the line with the understanding that it would not be economically self-supporting. With its almost empty trains and deserted stations.
